Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen live a hundred metres apart in Reykjavík with studios in the same neighbourhood. They met when Arnalds was working as a sound engineer at a venue where Rasmussen’s electro-pop band Bloodgroup performed. They started making beats together on weekends around 2009, but both had other projects consuming their time — Arnalds was scoring Broadchurch for ITV, Rasmussen was still running Bloodgroup — so the self-titled album didn’t arrive until 2014.
Arnalds’ own biography makes the project legible. He was the drummer in Icelandic hardcore punk and metal bands before pivoting to orchestral composition — the transition happened when a German metal band heard a demo with digital piano and string arrangements and asked him to score their album intros. Hardcore drums to chamber strings to minimal techno is only possible in a scene small enough that genre policing breaks down, and Reykjavík is that small.
The album is genuine minimal techno, not classical musicians visiting the form. The beats are functional, the structures are patient, and the classical elements — piano phrases, string touches — sit around the edges rather than dominating. The quality both genres share is patience. Minimal techno and neo-classical composition both reward sustained attention and gradual development. Kiasmos exploits that overlap rather than forcing a fusion.
