Plastikman Musik Plastikman is the conceptual source — False is Davide Squillace's project, and River Camping sits in the same minimal register that Musik established. -
Barem Never Better Than Late Barem and False were labelmates at M_nus during the same years, both working within a label aesthetic that prized structure over warmth. -
Ambivalent R U OK Ambivalent and False are the New York and Italian nodes in a label whose sound originated in Windsor, landed in Berlin, and picked up artists from everywhere in between.
False is Davide Squillace’s project — an Italian producer on an Argentine-inflected Berlin label run by a Canadian with a Detroit education. River Camping (2005) is from the earlier, lighter end of the M_nus spectrum, before the label’s aesthetic calcified into its fully austere phase. There is still warmth in it, or something that functions as warmth — a hint of the Italian house sensibility that Squillace brought from outside the Detroit tradition.
What the M_nus records share across their differences is a commitment to leaving space: the tracks do not fill in. Whether that space is melancholic or mechanical depends on the listener’s relationship to silence. River Camping leans toward the former.
