Otis Redding & The Jimi Hendrix Experience Historic Performances Recorded At The Monterey International Pop Festival Monterey (June 1967) and Winterland (1968) document the same San Francisco scene in the same period — Otis and Hendrix at Monterey, Joplin and Big Brother at Winterland, a year apart.
Live at Winterland ‘68 is Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company at Bill Graham’s San Francisco venue. The same city, the same scene, the year after Monterey. The Winterland recordings are rougher than the studio material, the band looser and the mix more exposed; this is the live version of the band rather than the recorded version, which were genuinely different things in 1968.
San Francisco in 1967–68 produced an unusual concentration of music happening simultaneously. This record and the Monterey performance share geography and moment — two documents from the same eighteen months, when that particular city was at its most generative and most volatile.
