Free Your Mind… And Your Ass Will Follow (1970) predates the full P-Funk mythology — made before, when the band was still closer to psychedelic rock than to the complex machine-funk that came later. The title track is a single continuous piece across side one: organ and fuzz guitar and drums at varying intensities, ending somewhere different from where it began.
The P-Funk records are the missing midpoint between psychedelic rock and the hip-hop that sampled them. Clinton absorbed what Hendrix had done with distortion and sustained notes, and arrived at something specific to his own project — a musical cosmology that the hip-hop generation then dismantled for parts and rebuilt into something new.
